N4D: TRANSFORMING KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTION FOR NUTRITION & DEVELOPMENT

COUNTRY-LED FINANCING

N4D is working with nutrition leaders on catalysing scaled up development financing in protracted crises

New Heading for here

Within the overall approach to catalysing more effective international support to countries, N4D has a major focus on improved nutrition financing for countries affected by protracted fragility, and in particular the three countries we are supporting. We consider that, as part of a Nexus approach, alongside more and better humanitarian funding, there is a need to scale up longer-term development aid in order to address the underlying causes of malnutrition, build resilience and strengthen local and national service delivery systems and capacities.

With this aim, we have established a working group consisting of senior nutrition leaders from our three focus countries plus Afghanistan to provide a platform for country led sharing of learning and advocacy. During the reporting period we commenced desk research (literature review and key informant interviews) to inform the development of a policy brief by the working group making the case for scaled up development aid for nutrition in protracted crises to be launched at the SUN Global Gathering in November 2024. The working group will also be developing and implementing an advocacy strategy for making this case on a continuous basis, including during the build-up to the N4G Summit.

N4D is working with global partners (the SUN Movement Secretariat, SUN Movement Civil Society Network, the SUN Finance Capacity Development Platform, the SDG2 Advocacy Hub and the Global Nutrition Cluster) to develop an approach by the international nutrition advocacy community to support country-led efforts aimed at mobilising country-specific domestic and external nutrition financing, aligned with national priorities. See Annex 9 for an overview of the approach which has now being operationalised, starting with compiling information from 7 countries on existing country led advocacy efforts and country support needs with a view to developing country advocacy support plans. Given our existing engagement in Ethiopia, N4D is playing a leading role to compile information for this country. We are working with the SUN Movement and SDG2 Advocacy Hub to curate an information hub for this initiative.

More and better financing for nutrition

Our latest episode in the mini-series on “More – and Better – Financing for Nutrition”, N4D are taking it global in a discussion with Dr Meera Shekar, who was, until recently, the World Bank Global Lead for Nutrition. She is the main author of the World Bank Nutrition Investment Framework 2024, a crucial document in understanding what it’s going to take to move global nutrition financing from where it is now to where we want to be in 10 years
